NIH HPC News & Announcements
Two upcoming classes related to storage
Date: 30 January 2017 10:01:45
From: Tim Miller
The NIH HPC staff will be teaching two classes in February related to
storage on the HPC systems. Please see details below. If you are
interested in registering, you may do so by visiting
https://hpc.nih.gov/nih/classes/ . Priority is given to current HPC users.
Using the HPC Systems Storage Effectively
Feb. 16: 9 AM - 1 PM
High performance computing requires high performance storage, especially
for data-intensive scientific disciplines such as genomics,
bioinformatics, and image processing. This course will teach NIH HPC users
how to effectively use the different storage systems available on the
Biowulf cluster. Special emphasis will be given for choosing the
appropriate storage system for a given workload. We will also discuss how
different applications access storage in different ways and how users can
understand the behavior of the jobs that they run. Users are encouraged to
bring their own questions and problems related to storage for in-depth
discussion.
The NIH HPC object store
Feb. 28: 9 AM - 1 PM
Object storage is a relatively new technology used to provide large and
reliable storage systems. Most prominently used by companies such as
Microsoft, Amazon, and Google as the back-end to their Web applications,
object storage is also becoming more popular for scientific computing -
especially in the life sciences. Researchers in genomics, electron
microscopy, and other biological disciplines can make effective use of
this type of storage. This course will introduce users to the concepts
behind object storage and will provide practical examples of how to use
the NIH HPC object storage system from the Biowulf cluster. We will focus
on specific examples and hands-on work with the object store.
