REMINDER: Anonymous FTP to be retired
Date: 21 September 2020 13:09:55
From: NIH HPC Systems Staff
This message serves as a reminder that the anonymous FTP server on
helix.nih.gov will be retired shortly. Please note that this does
NOT affect authenticated SFTP connections made with programs such
as WinSCP or FileZilla.
Uploads to the anonymous FTP server will be disabled on September 23
and the server will be shut off on September 30.
Original message follows:
Due to the tightening of NIH's IT security posture, the anonymous FTP server
on helix.nih.gov will be retired. If you have never used the anonymous FTP
server on helix.nih.gov (or were not aware that it existed), then you may
safely ignore the rest of this e-mail; your work will not be affected in
any way. In particular, secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) data transfer
to and from your /home, /data, or /scratch directories using your HPC login
and password is NOT affected by this change.
If, however, you are accustomed to sharing files with colleagues by
uploading them via anonymous FTP to helix.nih.gov and storing them in the
pub directory or if you regularly download files from
ftp://helix.nih.gov/pub, then you will need to find an alternate data
transfer or sharing mechanism. Uploads to the anonymous FTP server will be
disabled on September 23, 2020, and the service will be turned off on
September 30, 2020.
There are several alternative data transfer mechanisms available.
- To transfer or share large amounts of data to specific individuals,
located either at the NIH or at another institution, the HPC staff
recommends Globus - https://hpc.nih.gov/storage/globus.html.
- To share files with other users within NIH, CIT provides OneDrive -
see
https://myitsm.nih.gov/sp?id=kb_article&sys_id=1e424bebdbbc2f80dcd074821f9619c4
for details.
- To share small amounts of data with external or NIH colleagues, NIH
makes the Box service (https://nih.account.box.com/login) available.
You will need to request a Box account, if you do not already have one.
It is possible to transfer data directly to and from the HPC systems
using Box - see https://hpc.nih.gov/docs/box.html for details.
If you are unsure which data transfer mechanism is right for your needs
or if you have other concerns, please contact staff@hpc.nih.gov.
