Discontinuing SSH to Helix from Outside the NIH Network

Remote access to Helix (SSH) from outside the NIH network was discontinued on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 to comply with HSPD-12 and other security mandates. Users must be on the NIH network or the NIH virtual private network (VPN) to access Helix.

Accessing the NIH network from a remote location requires the following:

What options do I have to access Helix from remote locations?

The most common solution requires either Government furnished equipment (GFE) or verified contractor furnished equipment (V-CFE) with smart card (PIV card) authentication and configured to use an approved secure remote access method such as Virtual Private Network (VPN). Your information system security office (ISSO) can provide specific guidance for your IC.

Will any Helix network service be accessible from outside the NIH firewall?
Anonymous FTP Helix network service will be accessible from outside the NIH firewall.

What about other Helix network services that require authentication?
Any other Helix network services that require authentication will be limited to systems on the NIH network.
